Montepulciano, Pienza and the Valdorcia have often been chosen as ideal locations for films and advertising shorts due to their typical centres and the wonderful country side surrounding them.
We offer you an unusual itinerary to discovery the places where the most memorable scenes were shot, so you can relive the memory and emotions provoked by those images.

Film locations of Montepulciano
A discovery walk to find film locations in the centre of the old town; the Poliziano theatre, the Redi winecellar, the San Francesco terrace, San Biagio Temple and the splendid Piazza Grande.
In this suggestive setting numerous film and ads have been filmed since the beginning of last century. Many directors have fallen in love with the naturally scenic predisposition of the Renaissance town and suggestive glimpses of the architecture and the surrounding countryside. Some of the more famous film shot on location in Montepulciano:
The English Patient, A Midsummernight's Dream, Nostalghia, Under the tuscan sun, Heaven, Strana storia di Banda Sonora.
Film locations in the Val d'Orcia
The castles, farm houses, leafy roads, country chapels and monasteries, the gems of villages and the aristocratic palaces have seduced and continue to seduce, amongst others, film makers and audiences worldwide. Often forgotten in the daily humdrum by their inhabitants, places representing the memory of a dormant land are awoken by the magic of the cine-camera. The itinerary crosses the middle of the Valdorcia passing Castelluccio della Foce and the clay gullies of the Lucciolabella Nature Reserve. It proceeds along the old Via Cassia to Bagno Vignoni, a spa village of Roman origin chosen by the Russian film director Andrey Tartowskyi for
Nostalghia.
Returning towards Montepulciano past San Quirico d'Orcia the panorama from the main road will, in many places, look familiar to those who have seen at least once, Scott Ridleys' The Gladiator from 2002
.
Film locations in Pienza and Sant'anna in Camprena
Pienza is decidedly an open air film set, a location city as confirmed by a long list of films in which at least one scene portrays Pienza (not to mention all the ads shots ). To name just a few filmed in the town:
The Gladiator with Russel Crowe, Zeffirelli's Romeo and Giuliette, La meglio gioventù.
From Pienza we go to the nearby Sant'Anna Monastery, many scenes of the The English Patient, were filmed here using both the original building and reconstructions: you will not in fact find the chapel cum library bombarded in the final moments of the film.
